It’s here: the social media revolution

“Hire for passion, train for skills.”
This was one of social media strategist and author Jay Baer’s many recommendations when considering candidates to fill a community manager or social media coordinator position.
Jay Baer’s presentation, based on his book, “The Now Revolution: How to Make Your Business Faster, Smarter & More Social” was my first Social Media Week event. Many of the points he raised continue to resonate in my every day social media activity.
While social media has been around for a decade, our ability to measure, monetize and examine the effects on business is constantly evolving. This evolution is why it’s so frustrating to see job descriptions that either embellish the job’s requirements such as asking for seven-plus years of experience or positioning it as a menial task for an intern. You have to find passionate people, people who love social media—skills and tactics can be learned.
Baer said, “The goal is not to be good at social media, the goal is to be good at business because of social media.”
It doesn’t matter if you have a thousand ‘Likes’ or followers, if, after a social media investment, your business does not do grow sales, improve customer feedback or receive outside investment, then you’re doing something wrong. The same goes for company culture: employees are the company’s DNA, its lifeblood, and “everyone must pull in the same direction” to get the company’s social media message to customers and clients.
Another quote from Baer was, “Right now social media is a job; one day it will become a SKILL. Remember when typing was a skill? Think Mad Men.”
It’s not enough to be able to generate content for a Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Blogger feed. The way in which you voice each platform, whether for personal, corporate, non-profit, small business, etc. is a skill. And if you can work across different voices, industries, languages, then your skill(s) become incredibly valuable to your current and/or future employer.
